Significant GL Activities

Tuesday Times Roundtable

The Tuesday Times Roundtable is an event hosted every Tuesday addressing a series of topics ranging from immigration, climate change, education, gender and religion, to living with chronic illnesses. These conversations are nothing short of inspiring.

The first TTR I participated in was during my freshman year and it was about building a better Miami. The guest speaker, Emani Jerome, spoke about the history of Miami, subsequently highlighting the diverse cultures that make up its evolving dynamics and why we should become a part of the growth. I remember walking out of that presentation inspired and ready to take action. Shortly after, I started looking for ways to get involved on campus and the rest is history!

FIU Language Day

FIU Language Day is an event hosted every year in November, wherein students have the opportunity to practice their foreign language skills, meet new people, and learn about on-campus language and cultural clubs.

As a participant in 2019, I engaged in conversations with other language learners, got to practice my Italian, learned how to write my name in Arabic, heard inspiring stories from fellow students about how learning a new language opened new doors for them,  and signed up for the Italian and Portuguese clubs on campus.

Environmental Sustainability Series

The Environmental Sustainability Series was a series of interactive sessions hosted by the FIU Institute of Environment's Sea Level Solutions Center and the Office of Global Learning. Topics including environmental sustainability, water resources present in Miami, climate change and sea level rise projections, the benefits of composting, and the causes of extreme heat were discussed.

While I was somewhat knowledgeable on the topics discussed in this series from previous courses, my understanding was still enriched after participating in each session. I even learned about different ways I can modify my behaviors and contribute, such as adopting composing practices and uniting forces with community members in projects such as documenting sea level rise.

DC Fly-In - The Future of Equity in Health & Beyond: COVID as a Catalyst for Change

FIU's DC Fly-Ins are 3-day seminars hosted in the nation's capital, wherein students have the opportunity to learn about the process of policy making and the array of opportunities in which they can take part of in accordance to the topics they are most passionate about.

As a participant in the cohort of Fall 2020, I interacted with an amazing group of students and heard from important individuals including federal lobbyists, policy makers, and members of diverse think tanks based in Washington DC. I even had the opportunity to write a policy proposal based on the knowledge acquired throughout the seminar sessions. This experience was further enriched with informative articles shared by the program's associate director, Eric Feldman. In essence, an invaluable experience!
