My Road to Global Citizenship
Global Learning Courses
Global Citizenship Through Global Awareness
AMH 2020 - American History Since 1877
In this course I learned about various occurrences in history that marked and defined the identity of what America is as a nation today. Events, such as the urbanization and industrialization period are of special relevance when related to global learning. This is because during this time, large numbers of immigrants came to America establishing its identity as a nation of diversity. A quote from a paper I read in this class that resonated with me at the time was: "Although cities were filled with a diverse mix of ethnicities, languages, and religions, immigrants shared a lot in common." This course most definitely helped shape my global awareness as I learned about historical events that resulted in the conditions encountered today.
SYG 2000 - Introduction to Sociology
This course exposed me to present and past societal norms and the reasoning behind them. Herein, I learned about and reflected on human behavior based on gender, religion, cultural bias, medical conditions, etc. One of the most significant papers I read in this class was "Civilizing Bodies: Children in Daycare by Robin L. Leavitt and Martha Bauman Power, as it gave me a new perspective on the upbringing of children by their supervisors in daycare - one I had never contemplated. A quote from this paper that impacted my perception on this topic is: “The child's body, then, is both a biological, corporeal phenomenon and a social construction, shaped, constrained, and invented by society.”
MAR 3023 - Introduction to Marketing
This course not only taught me how to recognize and interpret a customer's mindset when acquiring a product or a service, it also taught me important skills, such as an entrepreneur's approach towards a market. This is of special relevance to global learning as I am now equipped with skills to advocate for and present solutions to causes that I care about, such as food insecurity, and engage individuals in power to enact change. Lessons herein received were especially useful during my participation in X-Culture's Start-Up Competition wherein my team and I prepared a business proposal to work towards the objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 3 - Good Health and Wellbeing.
CLP 4314 - Psychology of Health and Illness
This course expanded my global awareness from a health perspective. Herein, I learned about the relevance of health psychologists in the health care system and health policy proposals, as well as the evolution of the mind-body relationship throughout history and the perspective in different cultures. I also learned about the biopsychosocial model and how both, health and illness, are a consequence of the interrelationship between biological, psychological, and social factors. The lessons herein learned have been of special importance in my contribution to the student-led project: Equity Challenges in Miami, as I've learned about the existing inequities in the health field and have reflected on how the causes of health complications in patients relate to the biopsychosocial model and how the quality of healthcare could be improved if health practitioners kept this in mind.
